Research and Scholarly Activity
The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program strongly supports the active participation by residents and faculty in all types of scholarly activity and service to radiology. Residents who are the first author on projects accepted for presentation by peer-review receive financial support for travel for their first project; additional projects are supported if they also lead to publication in the peer-review literature. There is also a vacation bonus for those residents who are the first author on publications in the peer-review literature.
Our faculty and residents are also active in professional service. Dr. Diane Strollo and Dr. Jeffrey Mueller are part of the American Board of Radiology certifying committee for the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Strollo is also a part of RSNA Refresher Course Committee. Several of our faculty members including Dr. Strollo, Mueller, Mickus, and Casagranda have been invited lecturers for RSNA. Drs. Hartman, Klepchick and Spearman serve the American College of Radiology in a variety of posts including the ACR Appropriateness Criteria, which develops guidelines for the appropriate use of imaging. Drs. Bethany Casagranda, Matthew Hartman, Paul Klepchick, Timothy Mickus, Jeffrey Mueller, Michael Goldberg, Warren Chang, Charles Li and Matthew Miller have all volunteered their time and expertise to their various subspecialty societies on educational and scientific committees. Dr. Matthew Miller developed a webinar series with the Society of Breast Imaging which covers a wide variety of topics dealing with breast health. Dr. Michael Spearman is a past president of the Pennsylvania Society of Radiology.
Our residents contribute too, serving on various subcommittees of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, as well as participating as members of internal review teams for other Consortium programs. All residents have the opportunity to help with the medical student teaching, and our courses get some of the highest reviews from the graduating medical students. Matthew Hartman developed the AMSER Case of the Month and AMSER Rad Path Case of the Month which many of faculty and residents have helped to mentor our medical students publish online cases. Drs. Betty Shindel, Kyle Cothron, and William Peterson serve as editors for this endeavor.
We are proud that a number of residents have been selected to participate in the Introduction to Academic Radiology Program, cosponsored by the Radiological Society of North America, the Association of University Radiologists, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. This program is held annually, and there are only 80 residents invited to participate from across the nation.
We have had several publications from national meetings (RSNA) and peer-reviewed publications which was selected for Image Wisely and Dr. Michael Goldberg’s neuro publication on Covid19. We also included an article about our Radiology-Pathologic Rotation that was developed for our medical students--the first in the country!
